Tribune’s Burke to headline spring conference April 7-8 at Moraine Valley Community College

Chuck Burke, senior editor of design at the Chicago Tribune, will deliver the keynote address at the 36th annual spring conference April 7-8 at Moraine Community College, Palos Hills.

Burke, who heads up the Trib’s editing and presentation desk, is a South Suburban College and Eastern Illinois University graduate. He served as both editor of his community college newspaper and the Daily Eastern News at Eastern Illinois University.

As one of the leading editors of the editing and presentation desk, Burke oversees the daily production of news pages at the newspaper, among other duties.

Burke’s presentation will take place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, following four educational sessions at 3 p.m. and four at 4 p.m. Sessions also will be held at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Friday, April 8, leading up to the awards banquet at noon.

To attend the spring conference, ICCJA members must register for the conference with John Ryan, ICCJA executive director. To register, members can fill out the form on page 4 of this newsletter and fax it to Ryan at 217-581-2923 by April 1. They may also email the information to him at jmryan@eiu.edu.

Registration is $30 and covers the awards luncheon. Advisers can then bring the registration check with them to the conference or mail it to Ryan in care of Student Publications, Eastern Illinois University, 600 Lincoln Ave., Charleston, Ill. 61920.

Springhill Suites by Marriott/Burr Ridge, is the conference motel. The ICCJA rate is $109 up to quad occupancy. Reservations must be made by April 1. Phone 630-323-7530. Ted Powers, a past president and adviser of the Glacier at Moraine Valley Community College, will be hosting the conference.

The ICCJA annual board meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 8. To be eligible to attend the spring confernce and enter the 2010-2011 editorial contest, student newspapers must be paid members. Membership dues are $50 for the calendar year and may be paid with registration. See the form on page 4. Membership also allows members to attend the fall training conference at Eastern.
