Jet Magazine editor Mitzi Miller to give keynote address at spring conference March 29-30

Mitzi Miller, editor in chief of Jet Magazine, will be the keynote speaker March 29 at the 38th Annual Illinois Community College Journalism Association spring conference at Malcolm X College, Chicago.

Ms. Miller took over the top spot at Jet in May 2011 after writing for several magazines and authoring a novel.

Her presentation will be late in the afternoon on Thursday, March 29. The two-day conference will conclude with an awards luncheon at which the winners of the 2011-2012 editorial contest will be announced.

To register for the conference, members should email John Ryan, ICCJA exec director, by March 22, jmryan@eiu.edu. You also should make reservations at the convention hotel, the Crowne Plaza, 733 W. Madison, Chicago, 312.829.5000. Reservations must be made by March 15 to get the ICCJA rate of $119.

Spring conference set for March 29-30 at Malcolm X College; contest and dues deadlines are Feb. 17

Illinois Community College Journalism Association’s Spring Conference will be held almost two weeks early this year, convening March 29-30 at Malcolm X College in Chicago for the first time.

That means the deadline for the contest and the payment of dues to be eligible for the contest and conference will be due two weeks early as well. The deadline for all entries in the 2011 editorial contest will be Feb. 17. See below for details.

ICCJA’s 25th Annual Fall Conference to be held Sept. 22-23 at Eastern Illinois University

The Illinois Community College Journalism Association will hold its 25th Annual Fall Conference Sept. 22-23 at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston.

Professional journalists will lead sessions on writing, reporting, design/layout, photography, and press law, among other topics.

Registration for the conference is $30 and covers dinner Thursday, Sept. 22, and continental breakfast on Friday, Sept. 23. To register, contact Executive Director John Ryan at 217-581-7939, jmryan @eiu.edu.

ICCJA begins 2011 with membership drive, contest and spring conference at Moraine Valley

The Illinois Community College Journalism Association is beginning 2011 like it begins every year — asking student newspapers to join and rejoin the organization.

Membership dues are $50 per year and should be paid by March 1. Dues along with a copy of the membership form printed on page 4, should be sent to John Ryan, ICCJA executive director, in care of Student Publications, Eastern Illinois  University, 600 Lincoln Ave., Charleston, Ill. 61920, or FAXED to 217-581-2923. Membership allows student editors to enter the annual contest and to attend the spring and fall conferences.

The deadline for entries in the 20110 editorial contest will be  March 1. See page 2 for details.  This year’s spring conference will be held April 7-8 at Moraine Valley Community College, Palos Hills.

Again this year, the conference will be held on a Thursday-Friday, beginning in the afternoon on Thursday, April 7, and concluding with an awards banquet at noon on Friday, April 8.

Ted Powers,adviser of the Glacier and past president of ICCJA will be the host for the conference.  Registration generally takes place fromnoon to 2 p.m. Thursday. Four education sessions will be held at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. followed by the conference’s keynote speaker at 5 p.m.

The ICCJA Board of Directors will meet on Friday morning.   On Friday, the conference generally gets started with four educational sessions at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.   The awards luncheon will begin at noon.

Details on the conference will be forthcoming in a separate mailing in March. However, a registration form for the conference is included in this newsletter in case anyone wants to handle requests from their schools for dues and registration at one time.   If your school has frozen travel money and you will not be able to attend the conference, please let John Ryan know.

Like the spring conference, the fall conference offers educational sessions, but they are geared for training of new staff members to help them with their publications in the new year.   The spring conference offers more general sessions and is centered around the awards luncheon and announcement of the contest winners.
